Gas Prices Exceed $4 a Gallon

Americans paid an average of $4 a gallon for gasoline Sunday, the first time that mark has been hit nationwide.

The advance came after crude oil futures had a record one-day move, jumping $10.75 a barrel to more than $138, in New York trading Friday.

According to the travel and driving organization AAA, the average U.S. price for regular unleaded gas was at $4.005 on Sunday. The old record was $3.989 on Thursday.

The highest prices were in California, at $4.436 a gallon. Missouri had the cheapest prices, charging an average of $3.802 a gallon. Gas prices have risen nearly 30% over the past year.

Recently, crude futures were easing $1.18 to $137.36 a barrel. Reformulated gasoline futures were slipping 6 cents to $3.49.
