Now, obviously, the fact that two near-freeware applications from two small software vendors are duds for us doesn't mean you can't synch your Mac to a non-Mac mobile device. Plenty of companies do it quite successfully. But I think our experience serves as a good warning to the small business: If you are considering installing Apple computers in your shop, be doubly diligent about developing your mobile connectivity solutions.
Yes, iPhones can work very well as an on-the-road email and voice tool when working with Macs. But if you are invested in non-Mac mobile tools, you will find limited options to connect the two worlds. And I would strongly recommend working very carefully with your technology provider on the best connectivity solution. These days, you simply cannot afford to be unable to get your email while you're out of the office.
