Systemax SYX, a direct marketer of brand-name and private-label products based in Port Washington, N.Y., posted income of $18 million, or 48 cents a share, vs. $13.9 million, or 37 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue improved 7.2% year over year to $725 million. Shares tacked on 17% to $19.38. Finally, McGrath Rentcorp MGRC, which rents and sells relocatable modular buildings and electronic test equipment, saw shares rise 17% to $27.14. The Livermore, Calif., company announced a first-quarter profit of $10.3 million, or 43 cents a share, compared with $9.3 million, or 37 cents a share, in the first quarter of 2007. Wall Street was looking for 38 cents a share.
