Wednesday's Small-Cap Winners & Losers

Jumping early, small-cap stocks joined the broader market in posting gains, largely staying out of negative territory Wednesday. The Russell 2000 ticked up 2.3% to 721.85, and the S&P SmallCap 600 rose 2% to 380.14.

Shares of diagnostic company Volcano (VOLC Quote - Cramer on VOLC - Stock Picks) erupted to gain 17.4% at $14.45. The Rancho Cordova, Calif.-based firm posted a 35% year-over-year increase in revenue to a record $40 million for the fourth quarter. The revenue increase contributed to non-GAAP earnings of $4.4 million, or 9 cents a share, vs. $2.3 million, or 6 cents a share, a year ago. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were looking for a loss of 2 cents a share.

Meanwhile, Acco Brands (ABD Quote - Cramer on ABD - Stock Picks), a Lincolnshire, Ill., maker of office supplies, climbed 15.6% to $15.80 on fourth-quarter earnings. Excluding charges, Acco reported income of $36.2 million, or 66 cents a share, compared with $27.3 million, or 50 cents a share, in 2006. The Street was looking for EPS of 55 cents.

Chicago's SPSS (SPSS Quote - Cramer on SPSS - Stock Picks), a developer of business analytics technology, saw shares leap 17.9% to $37.15. For the fourth quarter, SPSS announced earnings of $10 million, or 50 cents a share, vs. $2 million, or 10 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. Analysts had forecast 38 cents a share.

On the losing side, Daktronics (DAKT Quote - Cramer on DAKT - Stock Picks), a Brookings, S.D.-based supplier of large-screen video displays, stumbled 10% to $17.54 after reporting fiscal third-quarter results. The company brought in a profit of $5.4 million, or 13 cents a share, compared with $7 million, or 17 cents a share, a year ago. Analysts were looking for 11 cents a share.

Shares of Milwaukee mortgage insurer MGIC (MTG Quote - Cramer on MTG - Stock Picks) lost 11.1% to $12.61 on a $1.5 billion loss for the fourth quarter stemming from delinquencies. Shares of Walnut Creek, Calif.-based sector buddy PMI (PMI Quote - Cramer on PMI - Stock Picks) were likewise buffeted, down 13.7% to $7.24. Philadelphia's Radian (RDN Quote - Cramer on RDN - Stock Picks) also slumped, off 10% at $7.33.
