Friday's Tech Winners & Losers

Tech stocks traded lower Friday as the broader market remained depressed over inflation fears from a spike in the consumer price index and its impact on the economy.

BlackBerry smart phone maker, Research In Motion(RIMM Quote) gained 2.6%, ahead of its third-quarter results, which will be reported on Thursday.

Two Wall Street analysts, from Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, issued bullish research notes suggesting that demand for smart phones remains strong and recent woes in the financial sector is unlikely to impact IT spending on RIM's products. RIM was up $2.61 to $106.91.

Video-games publisher, Take-Two Interactive(TTWO Quote), continued to rise on positive analysts sentiment around the release of the company's biggest title, Grand Theft Auto IV early next year. Take-Two is set to report its fourth-quarter results after the close of market on Tuesday. Take-Two was up 83 cents, or 4.7%, to $18.49.

Flat-rate mobile service provider Leap Wireless(LEAP Quote) gained 3.1% after the company posted a healthy fourth-quarter outlook.

Leap reported an adjusted loss of 9 cents a share excluding 55 cents a share in one-time taxes and charges in the third quarter. Service revenue came in at $354.5 million, compared with $350 million in the second quarter.

Analysts were expecting a 22-cent loss on revenue of $396 million, according to Reuters estimates. Leap said it expects to add 70,000 to 130,000 net new subscribers, higher than its earlier guidance of 40,000 to 120,000. Leap was up 75 cents to $34.89.
