Small-cap stocks rose solidly Wednesday, often outpacing the larger indices. The Russell 2000 Index was up 1.8% to 765.64, and the S&P Smallcap 600 gained 1.3% to 397.59. Shares of InterDigital(IDCC Quote), a King of Prussia, Pa.-based wireless technology developer, soared 18.4% to $20.13 after a U.S. District Court ruling in its dispute with Samsung over use of its 2G technology. The U.S. court confirmed a ruling by the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce that had awarded InterDigital $134 million in royalties owed by Samsung. Hickory, N.C.-based Commscope (CTV Quote) rose on raised fourth-quarter guidance. The provider of communications-network infrastructure solutions now expects fourth-quarter revenue of $435 million to $445 million, up from previous guidance of $420 million to $440 million. It further expects operating margins to reach between 11.5% and 12.5%, up from 11% to 12%. Shares jumped 15.7% to $46.50. Blyth (BTH Quote), a Greeenwich, Conn., company specializing in home expressions (candles), climbed 22.3% to $22.45 after swinging to a third-quarter profit and raising its outlook for fiscal 2008. The company posted earnings of $6.6 million, or 17 cents a share, up from a loss of $221,000, or zero cents a share, a year ago, adjusting for discontinued operations. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were expecting 12 cents a share. Looking ahead, the company now expects full-year earnings of $1.37 to $1.42 a share, excluding a charge of 25 cents to 30 cents related to the sale of its mass channel candle business.
