Before I dip into the Mailbag this week, I'd like to ask for some help.

The end of the year is approaching, which means it's a good time to review the past 12 months of biotech news -- and look ahead to what will move biotech stocks next year.

Michael A. writes: "Do you consider Advanced Life Sciences a good investment opportunity after positive results of its second phase III trial for cethromycin? The company has a market cap of merely $62 million. The cash on hand seems to be barely enough to make it into the first quarter, but a partner should be on standby by now."

Advanced Life Sciences shares were at $1.90 on Nov. 15 when positive results from the phase III study of its antibiotic cethromycin were announced. The stock rose above $2 over the next couple of days but didn't stay there for long. But on Friday, they closed back up to $2.08.
