Before I dip into the Mailbag this week, I'd like to ask for some help.
The end of the year is approaching, which means it's a good time to review the past 12 months of biotech news -- and look ahead to what will move biotech stocks next year. If you have suggestions for the good, bad and ugly in biotech stocks 2007, please send them along. I'll try to include your highlights in my end-of-year wrap. More importantly, what are the big, stock-moving events for 2008? Let me know where you'd like me to focus as I gear up for next year. Thanks. Now, back to the Mailbag. This week: Advanced Life Sciences(ADLS Quote) Cardiome(CRME Quote) Vertex Pharmaceuticals(VRTX Quote) and Dendreon(DNDN Quote).Michael A. writes: "Do you consider Advanced Life Sciences a good investment opportunity after positive results of its second phase III trial for cethromycin? The company has a market cap of merely $62 million. The cash on hand seems to be barely enough to make it into the first quarter, but a partner should be on standby by now." Advanced Life Sciences shares were at $1.90 on Nov. 15 when positive results from the phase III study of its antibiotic cethromycin were announced. The stock rose above $2 over the next couple of days but didn't stay there for long. But on Friday, they closed back up to $2.08.
