Monday's Late Winners & Losers

Stocks took a postbell breather after rocketing to finish the regular session sharply higher, but there were still a number of standout winners.

Among these was American Science & Engineering (ASEI Quote), which whizzed past Wall Street expectations with fiscal first-quarter income of $6.2 million, or 66 cents a share, compared with 41 cents a share a year ago. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were looking for 48 cents a share. The Billerica, Mass., company, which makes X-rays and other products primarily for homeland security markets, bounced 9.8% to $64.95.

Novatel Wireless (NVTL Quote) added 8.6% on word the San Diego, Calif., wireless-equipment maker reported soaring second-quarter income of $9.8 million, or 31 cents a share (excluding items) -- 8 cents higher than the average Street target. The third-quarter per-share profit was also forecast to beat by 8 cents. Shares were leaping $1.84 to $23.20.

Las Vegas-based Wynn Resorts (WYNN Quote) swung to an adjusted profit of 92 cents a share that crushed second-quarter expectations along with a more-than-doubled top line of $687.5 million. Shares jumped $9.92, or 9.2%, to $117.31.

On the other hand, Quality Systems (QSII Quote) slid 12.4% to $38.62 after the Irvine, Calif., developer of health-care information systems came in under consensus for both its top and bottom lines in the fiscal first quarter. The company earned 29 cents a share on $42 million in sales.

Elsewhere in the health-care sector, Houston's Encysive Pharmaceuticals (ENCY Quote) traded sharply lower after its second-quarter loss widened to $33.9 million, or 50 cents a share, from 48 cents a share last year. And oilfield-services company Omni Energy Services (OMNI Quote) said per-share income plunged 42.3% to 15 cents, which misses the sole analyst's call by 9 cents.

Encysive shed 10.1% to $1.70 in recent after-hours trading; Omni, based in Carencro, La., was losing 7.9% to $7.27.
