Energy-related exchange-traded funds were among the best performers Friday, as the looming summer driving season pushed crude oil higher.
Oil futures were up 65 cents to $70.22 a barrel. The Ultra Oil & Gas ProShares (DIG Quote) was up $2.71, or 2.8%, to $98.90. The SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Equipment & Services (XES Quote) was adding 59 cents, or 1.8%, to $37.28. The PowerShares Dynamic Oil & Gas Services (PXJ Quote) rose 43 cents, or 1.8%, to $26.07. The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Oil & Gas Exploration Index (IEO Quote) was higher by 96 cents, or 1.7%, to $59.05. A huge earnings beat by Research In Motion (RIMM Quote) propelled the Wireless HOLDRs (WMH Quote) ETF higher. The BlackBerry maker was also upgraded by Bank of America and JMP Securities, and the stock was soaring by 20%. The ETF was recently adding $1.62, or 2.4%, to $68.61. On the other hand, housing-related ETFs were among the worst losers of the day. A day earlier, KB Home (KBH Quote) said it swung to a second-quarter loss due to lower demand and dwindling home prices, and the weakness carried into Friday's session. Among other housing concerns, Beazer Homes (BZH Quote) was losing 5.7%, Hovnanian (HOV Quote) eased 3%, DR Horton (DHI Quote) was down 1.8% and Lennar (LEN Quote) was lower by 1.8%. The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Home Construction (ITB Quote) was recently falling by 52 cents, or 1.4%, at $31.23. The SPDR Homebuilders (XHB Quote) was down 40 cents, or 0.9%, to $30.36. The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Broker-Dealers (IAI Quote) was also losing ground. Among its holdings, Merrill Lynch (MER Quote) was down 2%, Lehman Brothers (LEH Quote) was losing 1.7%, and Legg Mason (LM Quote) was down 1.5%. The ETF was losing 46 cents, or 0.5%, to $54.96.- Loading Comments...
