Small Caps
Small-cap stocks saw mixed action Wednesday that recently had the sector climbing amid several spectacular initial public offerings.
Data Domain (DDUP) burst 54.5% higher to $23.18 after the data-protection company priced 7.4 million shares at $15 apiece, 7 million of which were sold by the company itself. The IPO includes an underwriters' option for another 1.1 million shares to cover overallotments. Fellow tech companies Comscore (SCOR) -- which operates a consumer-information Web site -- and Spreadtrum Communications (SPRD) -- a semiconductor firm -- also had impressive debuts. Virginia's Comscore soared 44.5% after pricing 5.3 million shares at $16.50 each; China-based Spreadtrum leapt more than 15% following its IPO for 9 million American depositary shares at $14 a pop. Meanwhile, Parlux Fragrances (PARL) jumped after the Florida-based company struck a licensing deal with pop singer Jessica Simpson for a signature-fragrance line slated to roll out in July 2008. Shares added 34 cents, or 7.7%, to $4.75. Web.com (WWWW) was 13.6% higher to $6.08 after the Atlanta-based Web-services company agreed to sell itself to Website Pros (WSPI) for $129 million, consisting of Website Pros stock and $25 million in cash. The deal will probably close in the second half of 2007. Website Pros shares were down 5.1% to $9.50. On the other hand, Trump Entertainment Resorts (TRMP) foundered after The Philadelphia Inquirer reported possible troubles in its efforts to be bought out by a Dennis Gomes-led private-equity group, having reportedly run into disagreements regarding the takeout price. Shares tumbled 9.8% to $12.51.TheStreet Premium Services
