AstraZeneca(AZN) said Wednesday that CFO Jon Symonds will leave at the end of July to become a managing director at Goldman Sachs(GS).
The search for his successor is in progress. Symonds joins the parade of drug industry CFOs leaving their companies. This year, financial chiefs at Pfizer(PFE), Amgen(AMGN), Wyeth(WYE) and Merck(MRK) have left their jobs or have announced their departures. Last year, Eli Lilly (LLY)and Johnson & Johnson(JNJ) hired new CFOs. Symonds had been with AstraZeneca and a predecessor company for 10 years. Having spent 17 years at the accounting firm KPMG, he joined the British drugmaker Zeneca as CFO in 1997. When Zeneca merged with Sweden's Astra in 1998, he became the financial chief of the combined company. His resignation was announced on the same day that AstraZeneca said it had completed its tender offer for shares of MedImmune(MEDI).
