Oil and gas-related exchange-traded funds were among the day's top performers, as crude futures hiked on geopolitical worries.

The front-month crude contract was recently increasing $1.06 to $66.14 a barrel, as investors reacted to Russian President Vladimir Putin's threat that his country's missiles would be aimed at continental Europe if the U.S. moved ahead with plans to install an antimissile system there. Natural gas futures also were climbing 30 cents to $8.18.

A pair of energy deals also had an impact. Dominion(D Quote) agreed to sell most of its U.S. offshore oil and natural gas exploration and production operations for $6.5 billion, and Atlas Pipeline Partners(APL Quote) agreed to pay $1.85 billion for Anadarko's(APC Quote) Chaney Dell and Midkiff/Benedum natural gas gathering and processing systems.

United States Natural Gas(UNG Quote) rose $1.93, or 3.8%, to $53.29. The iShares Dow Jones US Oil & Gas Exploration Index(IEO Quote) was gaining $1.50, or 2.5%, to $60.65. Ultra Oil & Gas ProShares(DIG Quote) was tacking on $2.04, or 2.1%, to $99.28. The SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production(XOP Quote) was adding 91 cents, or 1.9%, to $47.92.

Rising copper prices, driven by increasing concerns about a possible shortage of the metal, helped make ETFs tracking basic materials a winner. The PowerShares DB Base Metals(DBB Quote) added 64 cents, or 2.4%, to $27.50.

Bundled securities tracking biotech and cancer-drug companies were among the day's biggest losers, aided by drops of more than 2% for Genentech(DNA Quote) and Imclone Systems(IMCL Quote).

HealthShares Cancer(HHK Quote) was dropping 45 cents, or 1.5%, to $29.11. PowerShares Dynamic Biotech & Genome(PBE Quote) was dipping 17 cents, or 0.9%, to $19.15. HealthShares Emerging Cancer(HHJ Quote) was off 17 cents, or 0.7%, to $24.20.

Utility-related ETFs were also among the session's losers. The Ultra Utilities ProShares(UPW Quote) was off 47 cents, or 0.5%, to $88.93. The iShares S&P Global Utilities(JXI Quote) edged down 18 cents, or 0.3%, to $64.93.
