Monday's ETF Winners & Losers

Exchange-traded funds tracking basic materials were among the best performers of Monday's session, following news of a potential blockbuster deal between industrial concerns.

Pittsburgh-based aluminum giant Alcoa (AA Quote) said it was launching a bid to buy Canada's Alcan (AL Quote) for $27 billion. Alcoa was recently adding 6.3% to $37.89, and Alcan surged more than 32.1% to $80.60.

The Ultra Basic Materials ProShares (UYM Quote) ETF was recently adding $2.16, or 2.6%, to $86.08. The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Basic Materials (IYM Quote) ETF was higher by 78 cents, or 1.2%, to $68.53. The Materials Select Sector SPDR (XLB Quote) was gaining 48 cents, or 1.2%, to $39.88.

Bundled securities tracking silver and gold were also higher. Silver futures jumped 11 cents to $13.64 an ounce. Gold futures tacked on $2.10 to $691.80 an ounce

The Market Vectors Gold Miners (GDX Quote) climbed 1.2% to $41.19. The iShares Silver Trust (SLV Quote) was up 0.5% to $134.52. The PowerShares DB Silver (DBS Quote) ETF was recently higher by 0.5% to $26.61.

On the losing side, ETFs tracking oil and gas services were also falling, thanks to a dip in crude prices. Recently, the front-month June contract was down 85 cents to $61.08 a barrel. Crude oil prices have now fallen more than 8% over the last week.

The United States Oil (USO Quote) ETF was falling by 32 cents, or 0.7%, to $47.98. The PowerShares DB Energy (DBE Quote) ETF eased 32 cents, or 1.2%, to $27.20. The iPath Goldman Sachs Crude Oil Index (OIL Quote) was losing 23 cents, or 0.7%, to $35.11. The SPDR Oil & Gas Exploration & Production (XOP Quote) ETF was recently down 50 cents, or 0.8%, to $44.18.

ETFs tracking the Internet sector were among the losers of Monday's session. Among Internet names, Amazon.com (AMZN Quote), CNet (CNET Quote), and Yahoo! (YHOO Quote) were all lower by 2% or more.

The Internet HOLDRs (HHH Quote) was losing 50 cents, or 0.8%, to $61.60. The First Trust Dow Jones Internet Index (FDN Quote) was lower by 23 cents, or 0.9%, to $24.91.
