While the broader market teetered on mixed earnings, financial stocks soared higher after dispatching yet another stack of solid first-quarter financials.

JPMorgan Chase (JPM Quote) saw heavy volume and a 3.8% jump to $52.07 after the banking giant reported a 55.8% earnings leap to $1.34 a share, or $4.79 billion, that trounced Wall Street's $1.02 targets, according to Thomson Financial. Income includes an accounting-adjustment benefit of 11 cents a share.

The bank gave support to both the NYSE Financial Sector Index, up 0.7% to 9803.46, and to the KBW Bank Index, which moved up slightly.

California-based SVB Financial (SIVB Quote) sharply lifted first-quarter guidance to range between 74 cents and 76 cents a share, compared with 63 cents to 69 cents previously, boosting shares by 4.9% to $51.39. Lender CIT (CIT Quote) added 3.3% to $56.97 after posting first-quarter profits (excluding items) of $257.8 million, or $1.30 a share; analysts sought $1.27 a share. PNC Financial's (PNC Quote) adjusted per-share earnings likewise topped estimates, adding 19 cents from last year to $1.38. Shares were higher by $1.47, or 2%, to $75.34.

Among other banks issuing better-than-expected first-quarter profits were New Jersey's Commerce Bancorp (CBH Quote), which tacked on 2.1% to $34.49; Bank of New York (BK Quote), which was up 11 cents earlier in the day but closed down 12 cents to $41.45; and Washington Mutual (WM Quote) of Seattle, which surged 5.1% to $42.17 following its after-hours rise Tuesday.
