Stockpickr: Barron's Roundup

Stock quotes in this article: LEH , GCI , SLM , UBET , BCO , FCX , BSG

Editor's note: Welcome to Stockpickr's "Barron's Roundup." Each weekend, James Altucher presents Stockpickr portfolios related to articles in the latest issue of Barron's.

Bullish and Bearish: This is a portfolio of all the stocks that were the focus of bullish or bearish stories in the latest issue of Barron's. This week, there were bullish articles on Lehman Brothers(LEH Quote), Gannett(GCI Quote), SLM(SLM Quote) and others.

Barron's Activist Situations: Each week Barron's identifies the most interesting situations where activist investors are clamoring for change. This week's list includes Youbet.com(UBET Quote) and Brinks(BCO Quote).

Barron's Insider Purchases: This week's insider purchases. We provide a little more color on who's doing the buying. The latest list includes Freeport McMoRan(FCX Quote), Bisys(BSG Quote) and more.

Net Neutrality Index: Companies that will benefit from the undoing of Net neutrality. One is Cisco(CSCO Quote), but the article has some interesting small-cap plays, too.

The Barron's cover story is on Fidelity and mentions changes at the fund company that could lead to even better performance. Stockpickr details the holdings of several top-performing Fidelity funds, including:

  • (FCNTX Quote)The Fidelity Contrafund. Click here for the fund's portfolio on Stockpickr.
  • (FLPSX Quote)The Fidelity Low Priced Stock Fund. Click here for the fund's portfolio on Stockpickr.
  • (FMAGX Quote)The Fidelity Magellan Fund. Click here for the fund's portfolio on Stockpickr.

Research Reports: Each week Barron's publishes research reports on various small-cap companies. We provide a portfolio of those stocks with synopses of the reports. This week's list includes Global Payments(GPN Quote) and Napster(NAPS Quote).

Covered-Call Income Closed-End Funds: Funds that will benefit from increased volatility and have yields of more than 10%.

Profile: The Al Frank Fund: Barron's just happened to profile one of my favorite value-oriented mutual funds. Fund manager John Buckingham is bullish on the U.S. markets and favors deep-value stocks that trade close to or lower than book value. What I like about this fund is that they were also up in the bear years of 2000 (up 7%) and 2001 (up 30%).

Miniprofile: Hennessy Focus 30 Fund: Looks for cheap mid-cap stocks.

Miniprofile: Lord Abbett: Barron's speaks with investment manager Daniel Frascarelli of Lord Abbett, who is "tilting towards growth" and mentions his favorite picks.

Viva La France!: Stocks that could win or lose depending on who wins the presidency in France.
