Friday's Tech Winners & Losers

Shares of Checkpoint Systems(CKP Quote) were among technology's winners Friday, jumping 18.8% after the maker of retail-surveillance systems posted better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings.

The company earned $18 million, or 45 cents a share, on revenue of $216.3 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expected earnings of 38 cents a share. During the year-earlier quarter, the company earned $9.3 million, or 23 cents a share, on revenue of $192.5 million. Year-ago results included one-time items totaling $4.2 million.

Looking ahead, Checkpoint sees 2007 adjusted earnings of $1.20 to $1.30 a share on revenue growth of 3% to 5%, implying revenue of $708 million to $722 million. Analysts project earnings of $1.29 a share.

"Looking forward we remain cautious about the softness in the retail market given the indicators we're currently seeing in the marketplace, and this is reflected in our expectations for sales performance for 2007," the company said. "However, we made significant operational and management changes during 2006 and are positioned to leverage these changes and enhance our profitability as we move into 2007." Shares closed up $3.74 to $23.66.

Solectron(SLR Quote) shares rose 2.3% after the contract electronics manufacturer posted in-line second-quarter results and guided third-quarter revenue above expectations. For the period ended March 2, the company posted adjusted earnings of $41 million, or 5 cents a share, on revenue of $2.9 billion. Analysts expected earnings of 5 cents a share on revenue of $2.91 billion. During the year-earlier period, the company earned $29.7 million, or 3 cents a share, on revenue of $2.5 billion.

Looking ahead, Solectron sees third-quarter earnings of 4 cents to 6 cents a share on revenue of $2.9 billion to $3.1 billion. Analysts project earnings of 5 cents a share on revenue of $2.87 billion. Shares closed up 7 cents to $3.15.
