Google(GOOG Quote) board member Michael Moritz won't seek re-election at the company's next shareholder meeting, the search giant announced Thursday afternoon.

Moritz, one of the most successful venture capital investors of all time and a partner at Sequoia Capital, was an early investor in Google when it was a startup company. He also backed Yahoo!(YHOO Quote), eBay's(EBAY Quote) PayPal and Flextronics(FLEX Quote).

Additionally, he invested in video-sharing site YouTube, which Google acquired in October for $1.65 billion.

In a statement, Moritz said he was leaving the Google board to focus on his work at Sequoia. He said Google's management and founders "have generated substantial returns for Sequoia Capital's limited partners -- almost all of which are charities."

Sequoia was an early backer of tech companies like Apple(AAPL Quote), Cisco(CSCO Quote) and Electronic Arts(ERTS Quote), among others.
