Tuesday's Early Winners & Losers

InterMune (ITMN Quote) took a nosedive after the closing bell Monday as the Brisbane, Calif., biotech halted a late-phase study of Actimmune, its treatment for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (thickening or scarring of lung tissue), after the trial yielded statistically insignificant results that crossed a predefined stopping threshold. Those taking the drug actually had a 1.8-point higher mortality rate -- 14.5% -- than those taking a placebo. Shares were losing $5.20, or 18.5%, to $22.85.

Santarus (SNTS Quote) jumped after the San Diego-based drugmaker cut its fourth-quarter losses by more than half to $7.5 million, or 15 cents a share. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were seeking losses of 24 cents. Revenue was up nearly fourfold to $20.5 million, topping the $18.1 million consensus. Shares were adding 38 cents, or 6.1%, to $6.60.

ADC Telecommunications (ADCT Quote) swung to a fiscal first-quarter profit of $9.4 million, or 8 cents a share, compared with year-ago losses of $1.3 million, or a penny a share. Wall Street expected the telecom-equipment maker to earn 6 cents a share on $262.8 million in revenue, according to a Thomson Financial survey. Shares of the Michigan-based company were rising 46 cents, or 3%, to $15.73.

Rural Cellular (RCCC Quote) slid on wider GAAP-based fourth-quarter losses. The Alexandria, Minn., company said it lost $53.6 million, or $4 a share, compared with $21.9 million, or $1.38 a share, a year ago. Its year-end customer base, at 705.7 million, was nearly flat compared with 2005. Shares were off 92 cents, or 7.2%, to $11.87.

Barnes Group (B Quote), which makes aerospace and industrial products, said it will offer $85 million in convertible senior subordinated bonds to institutional buyers, with a $15 million option for the initial purchasers. Shares of the Bristol, Conn., company were slipping 53 cents, or 2.5%, to $20.42.
