Orders plunged 90% in Phoenix, dropped 80% in Denver, and fell 60% in Las Vegas, according to estimates from Majestic Research analyst John Tomlinson.
Tomlinson suspects Toll decided to temper its comments about the state of the housing market since the company cut its earnings guidance. "I think they got some guff from people saying the market had turned around and then they reported a 33% order decline," Tomlinson says. For the fiscal year ending in October, Toll lowered its earnings forecast to a range of $1.46 to $1.85 a share from its previous guidance of $1.58 to $2.08 per share.
