Thursday's Tech Winners & Losers

Shares of Avici Systems(AVCI Quote) were among technology's winners Thursday, jumping 14% after the networking-equipment company's fourth-quarter results blew past Wall Street's expectation.

The company earned $3 million, or 21 cents a share, on revenue of $15.9 million. Excluding items, Avici earned $4 million, or 28 cents a share. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expected earnings of 5 cents a share, before items, on revenue of $13.1 million. During the year-earlier period, the company posted a loss of $8.6 million, or 67 cents a share, on revenue of $6.1 million. Shares were trading up $1.09 to $8.63.

Stratasys(SSYS Quote) climbed 17% after the company posted better-than-expected fourth-quarter results. The company, a maker of models and prototypes for businesses, posted adjusted earnings of $3.9 million, or 38 cents a share. Analysts expected earnings of 36 cents a share. Revenue totaled $29.7 million, compared with analysts' forecast of $27.6 million. During the year-earlier quarter, the company earned $3.1 million, or 30 cents a share, on revenue of $23.5 million.

Looking ahead, Stratasys forecasts 2007 adjusted earnings of $1.37 to $1.49 a share, with revenue of $105 million to $110 million. Analysts project earnings of $1.36 a share and revenue of $109 million. Shares were trading up $5.39 to $37.90.

Shares of Opnext(OPXT Quote), a maker of optical modules and components, jumped 15% on their first day of trading. The company's initial public offering priced at $15 a share, at the high end of its proposed range of $13 to $15 a share. The offering of 16.9 million shares raised about $254 million. Shares were trading up $2.30 to $17.30.
