Tuesday's Tech Winners & Losers

Shares of Sohu.com(SOHU Quote) were among technology's losers Tuesday, falling 9% after the Chinese Internet portal company posted lower-than-expected fourth-quarter results and issued first-quarter guidance below expectations.

The company earned $6.1 million, or 16 cents a share, on revenue of $34.4 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expected earnings of 17 cents a share on revenue of $35.5 million. During the year-earlier period, the company earned $8.9 million, or 23 cents a share, on revenue of $29.7 million.

Looking ahead, Sohu.com sees first-quarter earnings of 12 cents to 14 cents a share on revenue of $32 million to $34 million. Analysts project earnings of 17 cents a share on revenue of $35.8 million. Shares were trading down $2.52 to $24.42.

Nuance Communications(NUAN Quote) jumped 15% after the software company posted better-than-expected fiscal first-quarter results. For the period ended Dec. 31, the company posted adjusted earnings of $24 million, or 13 cents a share, on revenue of $133.8 million. Analysts expected earnings of 10 cents a share on revenue of $129.1 million. During the year-earlier quarter, the company posted adjusted earnings of $11.4 million, or 7 cents a share, on revenue of $75.6 million. Shares were trading up $1.70 to $13.04.

Shares of Art Technology Group(ARTG Quote) slumped 14% after the software company posted in-line fourth-quarter earnings but issued disappointing 2007 guidance. The company earned $5.1 million, or 4 cents a share, on revenue of $32.2 million. Analysts expected earnings of 4 cents a share on revenue of $29.5 million. During the year-earlier quarter, the company earned $3.2 million, or 3 cents a share, on revenue of $25.7 million.

Looking ahead, Art Technology sees 2007 adjusted earnings of 5 cents to 8 cents a share on revenue of $117 million to $123 million. Analysts project earnings of 16 cents a share on revenue of $128.9 million. Shares were trading down 38 cents to $2.29.
