Shares of Archer Daniels Midland(ADM Quote) were among the NYSE's winners Thursday, rising 9% after the grain processor's fiscal second-quarter results easily topped estimates.
For the period ended Dec. 31, the company earned $441.3 million, or 67 cents a share, on revenue of $10.98 billion. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected earnings of 60 cents a share on revenue of $9.52 billion. During the year-earlier quarter, Archer Daniels earned $367.7 million, or 56 cents a share, on revenue of $9.3 billion. Shares were trading up $2.86 to $34.86. Silgan Holdings(SLGN Quote) rose 10% after the supplier of packaging products posted better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings. The company earned $20.8 million, or 55 cents a share, on revenue of $644 million. The results included pretax charges of $6.3 million, or 11 cents a share. Analysts predicted earnings of 47 cents a share on revenue of $648.1 million. A year earlier, the company earned $14 million, or 37 cents a share, on revenue of $586.8 million. Looking ahead, Silgan sees first-quarter adjusted earnings of 40 cents to 50 cents a share and full-year adjusted earnings of $3.10 to $3.20 a share. Analysts project first-quarter earnings of 50 cents a share and full-year earnings of $3.02 a share. Shares were trading up $4.81 to $51.64. Shares of Carbo Ceramics(CRR Quote) vaulted 20% after the oil-services company's fourth-quarter results surpassed expectations. The company earned $15 million, or 61 cents a share, on revenue of $87 million. Analysts expected earnings of 56 cents a share on revenue of $80.2 million.
