Doral Financial (DRL Quote) tumbled after reporting disappointing third-quarter results. The Puerto Rico lender, which is trying to overcome the fallout from a major accounting scandal, lost $37 million dollars, or 34 cents a share, in the third quarter. The Thomson Financial consensus had the bank losing just 12 cents a share. Doral fell 21 cents, or 6.6%, to $2.98.
Reinsurance Group of America (RGA Quote) jumped nearly 3% after a UBS analyst upgraded the Missouri-based insurer to buy from neutral. The analyst says the insurer has potential for growth in Asian markets. Shares were trading up $1.80, or 3.3%, to $56.27. Marsh & McLennan Cos. (MMC Quote) gained after a newspaper reported that the insurance broker is close to selling its Putnam Investments mutual fund division to a Canadian company for $3.9 billion. Shares were adding 4 cents, or 0.1%, to $30.76. ABN Amro (ABN Quote) fell a day after the Dutch bank said it would eliminate 900 North American jobs -- most of them in the U.S. and Canada -- by the middle of 2007. Shares were down 34 cents, or 1.1%, to $32.17. Wachovia (WB Quote) slipped after the NASD fined the bank's Evergreen Investments subsidiary $4.2 million for alleged violations in some of its sales practices.
