Winners & Losers
Shares of Red Hat(RHT) were among technology's winners Friday, climbing 18% after the software maker's third-quarter results topped expectations.
For the quarter ended Nov. 30, the company earned $14.6 million, or 7 cents a share, on revenue of $105.8 million. Excluding items, Red Hat earned $29.6 million, or 14 cents a share. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expected earnings of 12 cents a share, before items, on revenue of $104.2 million. A year earlier, the company earned $24.6 million, or 12 cents a share, on revenue of $73.1 million. Looking ahead, Red Hat forecast fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of 14 cents to 15 cents a share, above analysts' average estimate of 13 cents. The company projected revenue of $112 million to $113 million, compared with Wall Street's forecast of $111 million. Shares of Red Hat were trading up $3.25 to $21.20. Shares of Micron Technology(MU) rose 4% after the chipmaker's first-quarter earnings beat forecasts. For the quarter ended Nov. 30, the company earned $192 million, or 25 cents a share, up from $64 million, or 8 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue rose to $1.58 billion from $1.37 billion. Analysts expected earnings of 20 cents a share on revenue of $1.65 billion. Shares were trading up 56 cents to $14.05. Research In Motion(RIMM) fell 3% after the company posted mixed third-quarter results. The BlackBerry maker reported earnings of $176 million, or 93 cents a share, on revenue of $835.1 million. Analysts expected earnings of 94 cents a share and revenue of $815.9 million. In the year-earlier quarter, the company earned $120.1 million, or 61 cents a share, on revenue of $560.6 million. For the fourth quarter, RIM anticipates earnings of 92 cents to 99 cents a share, with revenue of $900 million to $940 million. Analysts project 98 cents a share and revenue of $861.5 million.
