Wednesday's Tech Winners & Losers
Shares of InterDigital Communications (IDCC) fell 7% after the wireless-technology company warned that fourth-quarter revenue will be well below Wall Street's forecast. The company sees revenue of $62 million to $63 million, compared with analysts' projection of $105.6 million. InterDigital anticipates recurring patent-license royalty revenue of $48 million to $48.5 million.
"The level of recurring patent-licensing royalties revenue for fourth quarter 2006 reflects the adverse impact on some of our licensees of delays in 3G handset purchases during third quarter 2006 in Japan as customers awaited the launch of both mobile number portability and several new handset model introductions," InterDigital said. Shares were trading down $1.95 to $30.84.
Versant (VSNT) shares jumped 24% after the software company reported a big jump in fourth-quarter earnings and revenue. For the three months ended Oct. 31, the company's earnings rose to $1.4 million, or 38 cents a share, from $512,000, or 14 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue climbed to $4.6 million from $3.8 million.
For fiscal 2007, Versant anticipates pretax earnings of $4.4 million to $4.6 million. The company predicts that 2007 revenue will be comparable to the $16.8 million that it reported in fiscal 2006. Shares were trading up $2.97 to $15.22.
Shares of Wind River Systems (WIND) fell 1% after the software company gave a disappointing revenue report for the third quarter and forecast another weak number for the fourth quarter. Wind River recorded third-quarter revenue of $70.6 million, up from $67.6 million a year earlier but below the $74.8 million that analysts expected. Wind River won't release its earnings for the period until it concludes a probe into its historical stock-option practices.
For the fourth quarter, Wind River projects revenue of $74 million to $75 million, below analysts' average forecast of $80.8 million. Shares were trading down 13 cents to $10.61. Other technology movers included Oracle (ORCL), down 69 cents to $18.17; Microsoft (MSFT), down 10 cents to $29.03; Intel (INTC), down 12 cents to $21; Sun Microsystems (SUNW), unchanged at $5.49; Sirius Satellite Radio (SIRI), up 2 cents to $3.87; Cisco Systems (CSCO), up 13 cents to $27.17; Level 3 Communications (LVLT), up 4 cents to $5.42; Apple Computer (AAPL), down 10 cents to $91.17; and Qualcomm (QCOM), up 10 cents to $38.84.Select the service that is right for you!
