Friday's Small-Cap Winners & Losers

Advanced Magnetics (AMAG Quote) surged 31% after the company reported positive results from a late-stage clinical trial of ferumoxytol as an intravenous iron-replacement therapy in kidney disease patients. Shares of Advanced were higher by $13.72 to $57.62.

Shares of Jinpan International (JST Quote) jumped after the company posted third-quarter earnings of $2.1 million, or 32 cents a share, on sales of $23.4 million. The company hasn't announced its quarterly results prior to this year. Jinpan was up 24% to $16.76.

First Solar (FSLR Quote) rose nearly 24% following its initial public offering of 20 million shares. The shares were priced at $20 each and rose $4.74 to $24.74 on the first day of trading.

Dynavax Technologies (DVAX Quote) advanced 17.6% after getting upgraded by a Wall Street firm. Bear Stearns raised its rating on Dynavax to outperform from peer-perform, lifting the stock $1.16 to $7.74.

Shares of United Retail Group (URGI Quote) were plunging 17.8% after the company's third-quarter net income sank 41% year over year to $1.1 million from $1.9 million. Earnings per share fell to 8 cents from 14 cents. Sales, however, rose 6% to $104.2 million. United Retail was losing $3.51 to $16.25.

National Lampoon (NLN Quote) narrowed its fiscal year loss from 2005, but its shares were still dropping nearly 10%. The company posted revenue of $3.7 million in fiscal 2006, little changed from a year ago. The company's loss was $8.1 million, or $1.20 a share, compared with a loss of $12 million and $3.69 a share a year ago. National Lampoon was falling 26 cents to $2.35.
