Shares of Cost Plus(CPWM Quote) were among the Nasdaq's losers Friday, tumbling 14% after the retailer posted a wider-than-anticipated third-quarter loss and gave a fourth-quarter forecast below Wall Street's expectation.
For the period ended Oct. 28, the company reported a loss of $11.7 million, or 53 cents a share, on revenue of $215.4 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expected a loss of 45 cents a share and revenue of $215.2 million. In the year-earlier quarter, the company recorded a loss of $2.7 million, or 12 cents a share, on revenue of $200.7 million. Cost Plus predicts fourth-quarter earnings of 84 cents to $1.03 a share, with revenue of $393 million to $408 million. Analysts project earnings of $1.09 a share and revenue of $395 million. Shares were trading down $1.92 to $11.48. Shares of J.M. Smucker(SJM Quote) slid 4% after the jam and jelly maker's second-quarter results missed Wall Street's expectation. For the period ended Oct. 31, the company earned $45.6 million, or 80 cents a share, on revenue of $605 million. Excluding items, the company earned $47.4 million, or 83 cents a share. Analysts expected earnings of 85 cents a share, before items, and revenue of $613.5 million.
