Thursday's Winners & Losers: Warnaco

Shares of Warnaco Group(WRNC Quote) were among the Nasdaq's winners Thursday, rising 8% after the apparel company posted better-than-expected third-quarter results.

The company earned $14.6 million, or 31 cents a share, on revenue of $452 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expected earnings of 26 cents a share on revenue of $435.4 million. During the year-earlier quarter, the company earned $6.9 million, or 15 cents a share, on revenue of $326.3 million. "We are pleased with the results reported today," the company said. "For the quarter, both the preacquisition business, led by the Intimate Apparel Group, and the acquired CKJEA business exceeded our expectations." Shares were trading up $1.79 to $23.50.

Advance Auto Parts(AAP Quote) rose 7% after the auto parts retailer posted better-than-expected third-quarter results and issued in-line fourth-quarter earnings guidance. The company earned $58.9 million, or 56 cents a share, on revenue of $1.1 billion. Analysts expected earnings of 53 cents a share on revenue of $1.09 billion. During the year-earlier quarter, the company earned $60.8 million, or 55 cents a share, on revenue of $1.02 billion.

Looking ahead, Advance Auto Parts sees fourth-quarter earnings of 33 cents to 37 cents a share, in line with the 36 cents that analysts project. Shares were trading up $2.31 to $36.77.

Shares of Chico's FAS(CHS Quote) fell 9% after the women's apparel retailer posted disappointing October sales and lowered its third-quarter earnings guidance. The company reported a 4.1% decline in same-store sales for October. As a result, the company now sees third-quarter earnings of 22 cents a share, down from an earlier forecast of 25 cents a share. Analysts project earnings of 26 cents a share. Total sales for October, meanwhile, came in at $125.3 million. For the quarter, the company posted revenue of $402 million. Analysts expected revenue of $419.4 million. The company plans to issue its full third-quarter results on Nov. 29. Shares were trading down $2.06 to $21.19.
