The PowerShares Lux Nanotech(PXN Quote) exchange-traded fund was one of the top gainers Monday, thanks to gains of 11% or more in holdings NVE Corp.(NVEC Quote) and Nucryst Pharmaceuticals(NCST Quote). The ETF was higher by 27 cents, or 1.5%, to $18.56.
Bundled securities tracking semiconductors were also performing well. Among individual names, Broadcom(BRCM Quote) rose 3.4%, KLA-Tencor(KLAC Quote) was higher by 3.2%, and Nvidia(NVDA Quote) tacked on 2.1%. The iShares Goldman Sachs Semiconductor(IGW Quote) ETF was gaining 1.2% to $60.78. The Semiconductor HOLDRs(SMH Quote) was adding 1.1% to $33.93, and the SPDR Semiconductor(XSD Quote) was up 1.2% to $48.56. On the flipside, energy-related ETFs were dropping as crude prices plummeted below $59 a barrel. The PowerShares Dynamic Oil & Gas Services(PXJ Quote) ETF was losing 1.6% to $19.20. The Oil Services HOLDRs (OIH Quote) ETF was falling by 1.2% to $133.18, and the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Oil & Gas Exploration Index(IEO Quote) ETF was giving back 1.2% to $47.65. Meanwhile, the Telecom HOLDRs(PXN Quote) ETF sank after major holding Verizon (VZ Quote) fell 3.6% despite posting third-quarter earnings that beat the Thomson First Call average estimate.
