Friday's ETF Winners & Losers

The Telecom HOLDRs(TTH Quote) exchange-traded fund was one of Friday's best performers as major holding Alltel (AT Quote) rose nearly 2%. The Telecom HOLDRs was up 30 cents, or 0.9%, to $34.08.

Bundled securities tracking health care stocks were also among the winners, as individual names WellPoint(WLP Quote), Humana(HUM Quote) and Express Scripts(ESRX Quote) rose 2% or more.

The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Healthcare Provider(IHF Quote) ETF was adding 0.7% to $52.88. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR(XLV Quote) ETF was gaining 0.6% to $33.79. The Vanguard Health Care(VHT Quote) ETF was higher by 0.5% to $57.86.

On the downside, ETFs related to oil services were among the weakest performers, as oil futures sank below the $57-a-barrel level. OPEC decided at an emergency meeting to cut output quotas by 1.2 million barrels a day. However, members of the group have sometimes neglected to go along with production cuts, and the U.S. Energy Department said it believed the actual reduction would be around half of the amount threatened.

The PowerShares Dynamic Oil & Gas Services(PXJ Quote) ETF was dropping 2.6% to $18.75. The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Oil Equipment Index(IEZ Quote) ETF was losing 2.2% to $42.44. The Oil Service HOLDRs (OIH Quote) ETF was falling by 2% to $130.14, and the SPDR Oil & Gas Equipment & Services(XES Quote) ETF was giving back 1.7% to $27.54.

In addition, the PowerShares Dynamic Building & Construction(PKB Quote) ETF was slumping after major holding Caterpillar(CAT Quote) tumbled nearly 14%. The industrial-equipment maker reported a weak quarterly earnings number and reduced guidance. The ETF was dropping 42 cents, or 2.7%, to $15.45.
