Winners & Losers
Yak Communications (YAKC) jumped after its board approved a deal for Globalive Communications to buy the company for $5.25 a share. Yak was up $2.86, or 73%, to $6.76.
Herman Miller (MLHR) beat fiscal first-quarter earnings targets and guided higher for the second quarter. The company expects to make around 55 cents a share on sales of $500 million for the second quarter. Analysts were looking for a 45-cent profit on sales of $476 million. Shares were up 11% to $32.52. Miva (MIVA), the former FindWhat, surged 12% after saying it expects revenue for the third quarter ending Sept 30 to exceed its previously issued guidance of $38 million to $40 million. Miva was up 34 cents to $3.17. UBS initiated coverage of three consumer products names, Avon (AVP), Clorox (CLX) and Colgate-Palmolive (CL), with buy ratings. Separately, Merrill Lynch upgraded Clorox to buy from neutral. Arch Coal (ACI) rose 2% after its board authorized the repurchase of up to 14 million shares.
