Genentech's(DNA Quote) shares slipped after the company said the Food and Drug Administration wants more data on a trial of its blockbuster drug Avastin in treating breast cancer. The decision will delay the review process for the drug's possible new use.
The FDA is requesting more safety and efficacy data on the drug, which is already approved to treat colorectal cancer. Shares fell 5.7% to $77.42. Oscient Pharmaceuticals(OSCI Quote) rose more than 6% to $1.16 despite concerns from regulators that data on the company's bronchitis drug, now proposed to treat acute bacterial sinusitis, didn't include enough safety information. An FDA advisory committee will meet Tuesday to discuss whether to support the drug's approval for that indication. Shares of Medical Action Industries(MDCI Quote) were up 3.6% to $25.35 after the company announced plans to acquire privately held Medegen Medical Products. Medegen makes items like wash basins, bed pans and urinals for hospital patients. Regenerx Biopharmaceuticals(RGN Quote) announced results of a new study that found the company's experimental drug, called thymosin beta 4, was successful in improving heart function in animals following a heart attack. The data confirmed findings in a previous placebo-controlled trial of the drug in 2004. Shares jumped 10.4% to $2.23. Other movers included Myriad Genetics(MYGN Quote), up 1.3% to $24.25, Elan(ELN Quote), whose shares gained 1.9% to $16.08, and Stratagene(STGN Quote), higher by 8.2% to $4.36.
