Wednesday's ETF Winners & Losers

 

The Wireless HOLDRs(WMH) was Wednesday's best-performing ETF, up 2.4%, as major holding Motorola(MOT) rose 2.6%.

Combined with jumps in Corning(GLW) and Lucent(LU), Motorola also supported the Broadband HOLDRs(BDH) ETF, which was recently higher by 33 cents, or 2%, to $17.06.

Bundled securities tracking semiconductors were also advancing. Among the strongest stock performers, National Semiconductor(NSM) was up 3.8%, Advanced Micro Devices(AMD) climbed 2.3%, Nvidia(NVDA) was gaining 2%, and Intel(INTC) was tacking on nearly 1%.

The PowerShares Dynamic Semiconductors(PSI) ETF was rising by 1.7% to $16.95. The iShares Goldman Sachs Semiconductor(IGW) ETF was higher by 1.6% to $60.84. The Semiconductor HOLDRs(SMH) ETF was tacking on 1.1% to $34.28.

ETFs related to oil services were weaker, as oil prices sank to their lowest levels in two months following the Energy Department's bearish weekly inventory report. Crude recently traded down 31 cents to $69.40 a barrel, having touched an intraday low of $68.65.

The PowerShares Dynamic Energy Exploration(PXE) ETF was sinking by 2.5% to $18.88. The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Oil Equipment Index(IEZ) ETF was falling by 2.1% to $43.86. The Oil Service HOLDRs(OIH) ETF was losing 1.8% to $134.95.

Housing construction ETFs were also falling after JPMorgan Chase downgraded homebuilder Hovnanian(HOV) to neutral from overweight, pressuring the sector.

The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Home Construction(ITB) ETF was losing 0.8% to $35.17, while the SPDR Homebuilders(XHB) ETF was lower by 0.6% to $31.09.
