American Physicians Capital (ACAP Quote) gained after the East Lansing, Mich., insurance company said its board approved an expansion of its stock-repurchase plan from $20 million to $30 million. The company has about $2 million remaining under the original $20 million authorization. The company said the buyback is expected to continue through Dec. 31 or until the $30 million limitation is reached. Shares gained $1.07, or 2.2%, to $49.26.

LoopNet (LOOP Quote) rose after the San Francisco-based online property management company said it surpassed 1.5 million registered members. Shares were up 16 cents, or 1.3%, to $12.40.

Cowen Group(COWN Quote) was higher after Merrill Lynch and Sandler O'Neill initiated covered of the New York-based brokerage with buy ratings. Shares gained 17 cents, or 1.2%, to $14.36.
