Today's Tech Winners and Losers

 

Shares of Travelzoo(TZOO) were among technology's winners Tuesday, soaring 45% after the online travel-services company posted first-quarter results that easily beat expectations.

The company earned $4.1 million, or 24 cents a share, on revenue of $16.9 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expected earnings of 14 cents a share and revenue of $15 million. Last year, Travelzoo reported first-quarter earnings of $1.8 million, or 10 cents a share, on revenue of $11.2 million. "Q1 2006 marks our 31st consecutive quarter of growth in online advertising sales," the company said. "Q1 2006 results were also impacted by a lower than anticipated loss from our Europe business segment and a decrease in our effective tax rate." The company's North American revenue soared 46% to $16.4 million, while European revenue jumped 49% to $565,000. The company's shares recently were trading up $9.05 to $29.03.

Flir Systems(FLIR) tumbled 10% after the thermal-imaging company put its first-quarter results below Wall Street's expectation. The company sees earnings of about 17 cents a share, compared with analysts' forecast of 21 cents. Flir estimates revenue of $117 million to $118 million. Analysts project revenue of $125.8 million. The company also said its tax rate would be higher than expected, ranging from 28% to 29%. "First-quarter revenue was below our internal expectations, primarily due to delays in certain program shipments from our Boston imaging location," the company said.

Flir Systems continues to expect 2006 earnings of $1.20 to $1.30 a share and revenue of $590 million to $600 million. Analysts project earnings of $1.25 a share and revenue of $590.7 million. The company plans to release its first-quarter results on April 26. Shares shed $2.87 to $26.88.

Shares of RSA Security(RSAS) jumped 15% after the maker of identity-authentication software posted better-than-expected first-quarter results. The company earned $5.3 million, or 7 cents a share, on revenue of $87.5 million. Excluding items, the company earned $10.5 million, or 14 cents a share. Analysts expected earnings of 13 cents a share on revenue of $85.5 million. Last year, RSA's first-quarter earnings totaled $7.2 million, or 10 cents a share, on revenue of $75.6 million.
