Arch Chemicals (ARJ Quote) said its Vantocil disinfecting agent is highly effective in controlling pet-associated viruses.

The Norwalk, Conn., company said research work performed by BluScientific Test Data at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland showed that Vantocil was effective within five minutes in controlling Canine parvovirus, a highly contagious and serious disease caused by a virus that attacks the gastrointestinal tract of puppies and dogs. Symptoms include loss of appetite, fever, vomiting and severe diarrhea. If left untreated it can be fatal.

Additional research also demonstrated that Vantocil was effective in controlling Feline coronavirus. Infections with FCoV are very prevalent in cats throughout the world, but in most cases the virus will cause no clinical signs or only mild, transient disease such as self-limiting diarrhea. In rare cases, this viral infection can result in the development of feline infectious peritonitis, which the Merck Veterinary Manual reports is almost always fatal.

Vantocil is based on the active ingredient poly (hexamethylenebiguanide) hydrochloride. In the U.S., Vantocil is registered for formulating hard-surface sanitizers and disinfectants, but not yet for specific use against either canine parvovirus or feline coronavirus.

On Friday, shares of Arch Chemicals fell 37 cents to $29.36.
