Today's Small-Cap Winners and Losers
Premium Standard Farms (PORK Quote) rose after the pork producer beat analysts' third-quarter earnings estimates. The company earned $13.8 million, or 44 cents a share, down from $23 million, or 74 cents a share, a year ago.
Analysts polled by Thomson First Call were looking for a profit of 29 cents a share. Sales totaled $242.9 million, compared with $246.8 million last year. Shares of Premium Standard Farms gained 97 cents, or 6.6%, to $15.69 in recent trading. Shares of Investools (IED Quote) gained nearly 6% after the investor education firm signed an agreement to provide customized content to Yahoo! Finance, the online financial information site. Investools advanced 35 cents to $6.40 recently. Pioneer Drilling (PDC Quote) slumped nearly 10% after the company said it agreed to sell 3 million shares. At the same time, Chesapeake Energy (CHK Quote) will sell 7.7 million Pioneer shares. The drilling company said it expects proceeds from the transaction of roughly $62 million after deducting underwriting discounts and commissions but before expenses. Shares of Pioneer Drilling fell $2.10 to $19.79. Shares of the Journal Register (JRC Quote) slipped after the newspaper publisher's fourth-quarter earnings dropped sharply from a year ago. The company earned $12.5 million, or 31 cents a share, down from $25.4 million, or 60 cents a share, in the prior year. Revenue slipped 2.7% to $140.9 million. Analysts were expecting earnings of 30 cents a share. Journal Register lost 37 cents, or 2.7%, to $13.28.- Loading Comments...
