Staar Surgical Lens Gets FDA OK

Shares of Staar Surgical(STAA Quote) surged Friday after the company received Food and Drug Administration clearance to market an implantable lens for myopia in the U.S.

The stock jumped $1.93, or 33%, to $7.70, a new 52-week high.

Staar received FDA clearance to sell its Myopic Visian ICL, an minimally invasive, implantable and "foldable" lens made of the company's Collamer material. The Company expects to begin shipping the Visian ICL to trained doctors in six to eight weeks.

Staar has permission to sell the lens in 41 other countries and says it has been used on 40,000 eyes.
