Crude prices remained below $60 a barrel for a second session Tuesday, as traders dealt with warmer-than-normal weather.

December crude finished up 9 cents to $59.85 a barrel. Unleaded gasoline rose 1.35 cents to $1.60 a gallon, while natural gas futures continued to fall, losing 34 cents to $11.86 per million British thermal units. Heating oil dropped 1.89 cents to $1.80 per gallon.

"We've been bouncing around," said David Pursell, a partner at Pickering Energy Partners. "Products have been weak, natural gas has been weak. Imports have been higher than a lot of people expected. We're sitting here waiting on winter and the weatherman hasn't been particularly cooperative."

The weakness is natural gas isn't helping the price of crude, Pursell noted, adding, "it's just not cold enough."

Nevertheless, he said, a change in the temperature trend could have an outsize effect on the commodities market.

"I don't think you need a lot of cold weather to push the prices up in the other direction," he said.

In addition, traders are waiting for the U.S. Energy Department's Weekly Petroleum Status report, which is due Wednesday.
