Shares of Ariba (ARBA Quote) were among the best-performing technology stocks Thursday, rising 20.3% after the company posted break-even, per-share earnings for the fourth quarter. Excluding items, the Web-based business software company posted income of $250,000 on sales of $84.1 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call were expecting a loss of 6 cents a share on sales of $85 million. Shares traded up $2.25 to $13.32. JDS Uniphase(JDSU Quote) fell 10.5% after the company posted in-line first-quarter results but warned that second-quarter results would fall below expectations. The maker of fiber-optic equipment posted a pro forma loss of 1 cent a share during the first quarter on sales of $194.5 million. Analysts were expecting a loss of 1 cent a share on sales of $191 million. Looking ahead, JDS Uniphase expects a second-quarter pro forma loss of 1 cent a share on sales that are down 8% to flat vs. first-quarter sales. That would imply sales of $179 million to $194.5 million, which is below the $200.4 million analysts had been expecting. Analysts also expected the company to break even during the second quarter. Shares traded down 37 cents to $3.14. Shares of Ask Jeeves(ASKJ Quote) fell 24% after the company posted in-line third-quarter results but warned that fourth-quarter sales would be slightly below expectations. Excluding items, the Internet search engine company earned 25 cents a share in the third quarter on sales of $75.7 million. Analysts were expecting 25 cents a share on sales of $75 million. Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, the company expects earnings of 32 cents a share on sales of $86 million. Analysts are expecting earnings of 32 cents a share on sales of $87.8 million. Shares traded down $8.41 to $26.58. Telular(WRLS Quote) rose 7.8% after the company posted fourth-quarter results above expectations. The maker of wireless products earned 4 cents a share on sales of $18.6 million. Analysts were expecting earnings of 1 cent a share on sales of $18.5 million.
