Mattel Recalls More Toys

Updated from 7:39 a.m. EDT

Mattel (MAT) is facing a second big recall of Chinese-made toys, some of which were laced with toxic lead paint and others because their magnets could fall off and potentially be swallowed.

The news comes on the heels of a recall two weeks ago of 1.5 million toys based on Nickelodeon and Sesame Street characters.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 7.3 million Polly Pocket play sets are covered by the recall, including 2.4 million that were recalled in November. About 1 million Doggie Day Care play sets are being recalled, as are roughly 683,000 Barbie and Tanner play sets and around 345,000 Batman and One Piece magnetic action figure sets.

In each case, the concern was that magnets inside the products could fall out and be swallowed by children.

Additionally, Mattel is recalling about 436,000 "Sarge" die cast toy cars worldwide because the paint on the items could contain excessive levels of lead.

The affected toys were all manufactured in China. This past weekend, state-run newspapers reported that the co-owner of the factory that was the source of the first batch of recalled toys committed suicide.

Concerns about the safety of Chinese-made goods have been on the rise since this past spring, when RC2 (RCRC) was forced to recall 1.5 million Thomas the Train toys for lead paint contamination.
