Nasdaq Closes Slightly Higher, but Dow Finishes Lower

ended Friday in positive territory, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average

closed down but still off its earlier lows.
The Dow lost 38.9 points, or 0.37%, to 10,416.7. The Nasdaq finished up 6.86 points, or 0.34%, to 2029.8, and the S&P 500

was higher by 3 points, or 0.25%, to 1205.9.
JDS Uniphase (JDSU Quote) closed lower after posting a steep
fourth-quarter loss and setting plans to cut its workforce by nearly two-thirds. JDS lost 91 cents, or 10%, to $8.55.
Data storage firm
EMC (EMC Quote) was the most active stock on the
New York Stock Exchange and climbed 74 cents, or 3.84%, to $20.01.
In overseas activity, the FTSE-100 had a strong day, advancing 117 points, or 2.21%, to 5403.1. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 60 points, or 0.51%, to 11,798.1. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng climbed 142 points, or 1.18%, to 12,182 on the strength of technology stocks.
Back in the U.S., Internet, biotech and networking stocks had strong sessions. The 10-year benchmark Treasury note was recently up 7/32 to 99 7/32, yielding 5.104%. As for currencies, the dollar slid against both the euro and the yen today in the wake of this morning's weaker-than-expected GDP numbers.
