Ariba (ARBA) named President and Chief Operating Officer Larry Mueller to the new post of chief executive, where he will replace Keith Krach.

Krach will continue as chairman of the business-to-business software company's board. Mueller, age 48, became president and operating chief of Ariba in January 2000. He joined the company in October 1999.

TheStreet.com recently took a deeper look at the possibility that Krach was wearing out his welcome as CEO. The speculation about a possible management change heated up just days before Ariba issued a revenue and profit warning on April 2.

Shares of Ariba gained 54 cents, or 7.3%, to $7.94 in recent Nasdaq trading.
