Alberto-Culver To Lay Off 160, Consolidate Plants

MELROSE PARK, Ill. (AP) — Alberto-Culver Co., the maker of Alberto VO5 shampoo and Noxzema skin cream, said on Friday that it will lay off 160 people and consolidate its facilities to streamline the company.
The company said "a significant portion" of the manufacturing done in Chatsworth, Calif. would be sent to other facilities, including a new plant in Jonesboro, Ark. It also said it would consolidate its warehouse and offices in Chatsworth.
Alberto-Culver said the layoffs would be done by the end of June 2010.
It said it expects to take restructuring charges of about $8 million, including about $5 million in cash charges for severance, contract termination and other exit costs.
In April, the Melrose Park, Ill.-based company reported that its second-quarter profit fell 3 percent to $28.1 million, while revenue fell 1.4 percent to $344.3 million.
Alberto-Culver shares rose 2 cents to close at $24.90.
