RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Allegheny Energy Inc. says Virginia has approved an interim rate increase for customers of its Potomac Edison Co. subsidiary.

Greensburg, Pa.-based Allegheny said Wednesday the average residential bill in Virginia will increase $5.47, or 6 percent, to approximately $96 a month July 1.

Allegheny says it needs the increase to pay for power it has purchased for Virginia customers.

The Virginia State Corporation Commission is expected to take up Allegheny's request for a permanent rate hike later.

Allegheny has approximately 102,000 customers in Virginia. It also has operations in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland.
