NEW YORK -- Shares of some top financial companies were down at the close of trading:

Goldman Sachs (GS) fell $7.89 or 10.6%, to $66.79.

Merrill Lynch (MER) fell $1.55 or 10.4%, to $13.35.

Morgan Stanley (MS) fell $2.14 or 15.2%, to $11.94.

Bank of America (BAC) fell $1.69 or 9.0%, to $17.00.

CIT Group (CIT) fell $.60 or 15.2%, to $3.36.

Citigroup (C) fell $1.16 or 10.7%, to $9.64.

JPMorgan Chase (JPM) fell $1.78 or 4.9%, to $34.57.
