After spending the morning in positive territory, the Dow Jones Industrial Average reversed to finish with a loss of 86 points, or 0.7%, to 12,216. The S&P 500 slipped 10.4 points, or 0.8%, to 1315, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 19.7 points, or 0.9%, to 2261.

For the week, the Dow fell 1.2% and the S&P dropped 1.1% -- but the Nasdaq managed a 0.1% gain.
