I will tell you what will happen. We will have to focus on the fundamentals, and that means things aren't so hot. I have been adamant that nothing should happen to this market until we get a resolution of the autos. If we get one where the companies are kept alive, then we are going to find our way to higher levels eventually. You let 'em go and we find they are right about the notion that we won't buy cars from a bankrupt company, we are not going to be able to avoid double-digit employment, and there are no number of upside surprises from the likes of Home Depot (HD - commentary - Cramer's Take) or Hewlett-Packard (HPQ - commentary - Cramer's Take) that can save us. In the meantime, we see the same stocks being used as props. Exhibit A, which I am going to keep on harping on is Exxon Mobil (XOM - commentary - Cramer's Take). This is a big-cap company that is the key to moving the Dow and the S&P. If you can get it going, and it is easy to get stocks going in this thin market, you have hope. You add in the other key stocks, Apple (AAPL - commentary - Cramer's Take), Research In Motion (RIMM - commentary - Cramer's Take) and Chevron (CVX - commentary - Cramer's Take), you have something to build a rally around and no matter how thin the volume, no matter how bad the breadth, a rally from down 100 and change gets called a victory and the triple bottom has held, and we can avoid talk of the fundamentals until we go higher. Lots at stake. Don't need much capital to make it happen. At the time of publication, Cramer was long Chevron. Know What You Own: Other stocks that could be of interest to readers of this post are BP (BP - commentary - Cramer's Take) and Lowe's (LOW - commentary - Cramer's Take).
