Action Alert: Dell, Conexant

Time to make some big changes in the portfolio. First, I am buying two new stocks: Dell (DELL:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis) and Conexant (CNXT:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis). Second, I am financing these winners by selling stock in two losers: Constellation Energy (CEG:NYSE - news - commentary - research - analysis) and Fluor (FLR:NYSE - news - commentary - research - analysis).

Ahead of 2002, which I predict will be a rebound year for more economically sensitive stocks such as technology-based equities, I want to get even longer in tech, which has been market-weighted in my portfolio.

I am picking two share-takers: Dell, which is taking big share in personal computers, and Conexant, once one of my favorite stocks, which makes chips for wireless and I think is taking share away from RF Micro (RFMD:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis), which had become the dominant wireless chip play. I think personal computers and wireless are both stronger than expected.

Both stocks have kickers: Dell has an excellent server business that is taking share from Sun Micro (SUNW:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis) (Sun's boxes are expensive to maintain compared with Dell's); and as for Conexant's Mindspeed business, a Net infrastructure company that can eventually be spun off -- consider it a lottery ticket.

I bought both Fluor and Constellation Energy with the idea that there was an energy crisis that would require more plants being built and would put generators of energy in the driver's seat. That's no longer the case. Energy is sinking, there is no crisis and I don't want to be levered to it anymore.
