VeriSign's Next Chapter: Another Breakdown
By Gary B. Smith
Special to TheStreet.com

7/26/01 9:20 AM ET

Whenever I look at a chart, what I'm trying to do is complete "the rest of the story." That is, the chart has told the first two chapters, and based on seeing similar patterns in the past, I simply try to complete the story by filling in the remaining chapters. Look at enough charts, and you'll get the story right most of the time.

Of course, there are always surprise endings, but that's what trading's all about. Could there be a surprise ending with VeriSign (VRSN:Nasdaq - news - commentary)? Could it go on to make new highs? Of course, but I've seen this "story" before, and it invariably ends badly. In other words, if you buy VeriSign now, you're on your own.
